An ongoing project/exploration into the design of digital cameras. The subject serving as a platform to improve design skills. The current direction is towards a compact format camera.

thumbnail sketches created to ideate the general location of features on the camera body. These sketches pertain to a handheld compact format. The sketches below were ideations of a DSLR design that I initially explored.
Roughly the size of a smart phone, the design is intended to be easily portable while still offering some of the capabilities of a mirrorless or DSLR camera. It is designed to be convenient to carry and quick to use, making high-quality photography more accessible without the bulk of traditional camera systems.
The camera features a compact removable lens, large built-in flash, RAW format shooting, manual controls with physical interfaces, and a customizable profile system
The control panel has a linear action dial with shutter button in the middle, sequential dial for selecting shooting profiles, binary button for recording, and a 4 axis panel for menu navigation.
Using the second numbered dial, the user selects which profile to adjust capture settings for. In the photography landscape, many pre-configured profiles often go unused, with the manual option being the primary choice. This system allows the user to create custom profiles for different environments they frequently shoot
Various designs for UI elements. DIN 1451 was used for menu elements; developed by the German Institute for Standardization (Deutsches Institut für Normung), the typeface exists in the public domain.
The final object was assembled using only a mallet.
